Accurate, long-term wind data is critical for every stage of wind farm development. That’s why we’ve introduced a new Statistics module in Whiffle Wind, delivering long-term representative Wind Resource Grids (WRGs), turbulence statistics, and energy production estimates. Whether you’re conducting a feasibility study, running virtual met mast campaigns, or modelling wake-induced losses, Whiffle Wind Statistics is the ideal tool. Outputs from Whiffle Wind Statistics integrate seamlessly into existing workflows, with full compatibility for standard applications like WindPRO and OpenWind.
LES-based statistics that plug straight into your workflow
Whiffle Wind Statistics delivers the high-resolution data and flexibility needed for accurate, site-specific modelling:
- Analyse wind conditions with or without turbine effects.
- Leverage LES simulations and account for all weather complexities.
- Use high-quality terrain and elevation data for accurate site representation.
- Customise the area of interest, up to 128 x 128 km.
- Generate 100-meter-grid WRGs, containing Weibull and Wind Rose distributions.
- Access additional metrics like Turbulence Intensity (TI), Energy Production, and Vertical Wind Profiles.
- Get fast results – delivered in 6–24 hours, depending on site size.
- Integrate seamlessly with standard wind modelling tools
- Tap into to Whiffle’s Wind Resource team for expert support, if needed.

A smart approach to long-term wind statistics
Whiffle Wind applies a smart-day selection process before running Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), ensuring the generated statistics are inherently representative of long-term conditions. This method captures long-term variability with high accuracy, providing reliable wind resource and energy yield data.
Under the hood, Whiffle Wind Statistics uses:
- ERA5 global reanalysis data* to establish long-term climate trends.
- High-resolution topography and land-use data to accurately model terrain effects.
- LES simulations to resolve wind speed, shear, turbulence, and wake effects at a 100m resolution.
- Optional user-provided met mast data for additional calibration, bias correction, or validation.

Translating LES output into actionable project inputs
Here’s how you can apply Whiffle Wind’s long-term LES statistics across your project workflow:
Feasibility studies | 1. Generate long-term Wind Resource Grids (WRGs) with Weibull and Wind Rose distributions. 2. Analyse key parameters such as mean wind speed, extreme wind speeds, and turbulence intensity (TI) to support preliminary business case assessments. |
Horizontal extrapolation of measurements | 1. Use Whiffle Wind Statistics to calibrate and bias-correct short-term measurement datasets (1-2 years) for long-term wind climate representation. 2. Improve the accuracy of wind resource assessments by correcting local measurements using MCP methods. |
Comparison of wind farm layouts | 1. Evaluate multiple wind farm design by running separate Statistics simulations for each layout. 2. Compare waked and unwaked AEP estimates to quantify long-term wake losses, helping identify the most efficient and productive configuration. |
Wake modelling for energy yield assessments | 1. Compare waked and un-waked AEP estimates across different wind farm layouts using separate Statistics runs. 2. Integrate wake effects from external wind farms (planned or existing) into ambient wind conditions for more realistic yield assessments. |
Impact studies for operational wind farms | 1. Evaluate external influences on operational wind farms by assessing wake effects from nearby developments. 2. Support energy yield assessments with long-term representative wind data, reducing uncertainty in performance analysis |
Transparent, pay-per-run pricing
Whiffle Wind’s smart-day selection algorithm ensures long-term representativeness at a competitive price. Pricing is based on domain size, with costs structured as follows:
Domain size* | Price estimate for 1 Statistics run |
