Contributing to the Ongoing Discussion Around ‘Wind Theft’ in Offshore Wind (via BBC Future)

BBC Future recently covered the growing issue of wake interactions between neighbouring wind farms  – often referred to as “wind theft.” As offshore development becomes denser, the impact of inter-farm wake losses is gaining attention, raising questions around how to quantify, mitigate, and manage these effects.

Our very own Peter Baas contributed to the article, drawing on insights from his work in the WINS50 project, which studied wake behaviour across large offshore wind clusters in the North Sea. WINS50 is one of the few studies to quantify how far these effects can extend, and under what conditions they become significant.
