Solar energy

Increase the value of your solar farm with our precision weather model

Whiffle’s technology is ideally suited for solar energy applications. The power production of solar panels mainly depends on solar irradiance, the power per unit area received from the Sun. Part of the incoming solar radiation is reflected into space due to the atmosphere and mostly by clouds. On a cloudy day, a significant amount of solar irradiance is reflected. Forecasting solar power production therefore depends on the ability to forecast clouds.

Whiffle’s cloud resolving atmospheric model can accurately capture local clouds in all their varieties, including stratocumulus. Coupled to detailed calculations of the solar radiation, our technology produces realistic forecasts of solar irradiance at unprecedented resolution.

Forecasting

Lowering imbalance risks

Our innovative weather model enables solar energy production that is more predictable and therefore benefits customers in the solar energy value chain. The model can predict any meteorological variable at unmatched resolution, including local solar irradiance. Next to Whiffle’s model, different numerical weather prediction models and measurements can be utilized to produce short-term weather- and power production forecasts.

For whom?

Whiffle’s ultra-high resolution atmospheric modelling capabilities are of direct value to energy traders, utilities, TSOs, DSOs, operators and owners in the wind energy value chain. Value is also offered by delivering our services through specialized weather companies and power forecasting service providers.

Solar Resource Assessments

Precise yield and lower financing costs

Solar resource assessments are of importance during the development and operation of solar farms to assess the local climate and annual energy production. Improved atmospheric modelling therefore directly benefits reduced uncertainty in the annual energy production and an enhanced understanding of the local climate. Whiffle’s technology is perfectly suited to simulate long timeseries of any meteorological variable at unprecedented resolution, including solar irradiance.

For whom?

Whiffle’s ultra-high resolution atmospheric modelling capabilities are of direct value to project developers, manufacturers, utilities, consultants, operators and owners in the wind energy value chain. Value is also offered by delivering our technology through value added resellers.
